Lol and I thought I had it hard in New Zealand when I have to scrape ice off my windscreen in the morning

I lived in kyoto as an expat for 3 years. There was an old man, 80 something, who lived near my house. Everyday, I saw him searching and collecting trash early morning and sweeping the place. Then out of curiosity I asked him why he did what he did even at such an old age, considering there were urban cleaning services to do the job? To this he replied very politely "It's my duty as well, to do service to the environment, as much as it is of the Urban cleaning services." That left me red-faced with embarrassment.

Please tell me this place is still open. I plan on checking it out soon!

Japanese who are fluent in American are quite out of the average. So, I think it's best not to take them seriously because they have a pronounced bias. For example, if you learn the languages of Asia or other European countries, you can expect very different reactions to traditional rules. North America is an immigrant nation with a short history. The country is huge but quite unique.

And people wonder why suicide rates gone up in Japan.

I think the mini toaster is awesome, use your knife or tongs to remove and no need to take it out-just eat from the tray. $40 is worth it for me. I also liked the mini bento box and I could cook many things in it. We have mini crock pots for work and they awesome especially if you just meal prep in a ziplock bag at home. You just dump the contents in the morning. By lunch you have a healthy meal and it is warm and cozy. I see the bento very similar but with the ability to make fresh rice- frozen rice is just ok.

wow, I really like how close everyone is. The store owners all know each other and seem to have a good relationship with each other + support the business of others and their customers do the same. This area feels very homely and cozy :)

It's funny because from what I've seen, the corporate culture of Japan has people there able to drink the average American under the table on a casual weekday, albeit not at home. Which isn't to say a lot of Americans aren't louder than the average Japanese person when sober, but everyone I know who actually wants to live and work in Japan are introverts who specifically find the quiet aspects of Japanese culture appealing. Just makes the whole "party" thing a bit ironic

It's surprising that even after becoming satellite state of US, Japanese didn't forget their culture and that what makes them stand out from the world without western influence.

In the US we couldn’t afford to buy school lunches. The poor children got free lunches and the wealthy could buy. We had to bring lunch from home……after my dad got out of the military….

My Pinay wife and I return from the States to the Philippines each December to see family in Las Piñas Metro Manila. And it’s true: the malls are the place to walk in. Air conditioned and wow! They are usually huge! Five levels high!

I will soon move into a very small house (about 20m2). The advantages are just enormous : - low taxes, - low maintenance - low energetic coast (heat, electricity...), - look more cosy than big houses (at least from my point of view) - less worry (about possible issues to fix on the house)...
